An International Symposium organized on the οccasion of the Hand of Angelos exhibition
FROM 15/01/2011 - TO 16/01/2011
The International Symposium entitled “1400-1450: artistic production in Constantinople, Venice and Venetian Crete” aiming at discussing the art which was produced in Constantinople, Venice and Venetian Crete during the first half of the fifteenth century.

Central theme to the Symposium is the work of the painter Angelos and its place in the artistic production of Late Byzantium. Italian influences in the work of Angelos and especially its relation to Venetian painting is another theme to be discussed. The two-sided icon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate with the Virgin Pafsolype on one side and the Crucifixion on the other will be especially treated in an effort to understand the work itself, the special conditions of its production and the place of its origin. Art in Venice during the first half of the fifteenth century and the reciprocal relations between the Serenissima, Constantinople and Venetian Crete are of special importance to this conference. Another issue of great interest for the period under discussion is the Council of Ferrara/Florence (1438-1439) and the art which was associated with or produced under its influence in East and West. Other themes to be discussed at the Symposium are: the presence of Byzantine painters in Venice and in northern Italy in general˙ the move of Constantinopolitan painters to Venetian Crete and the presence of Venetian painters in Crete.
