Conference Engonopoulos 2007: the poet and the painter
FROM 23/11/2007 - TO 25/11/2007
A two-day scientific conference in which 35 scholars, from Greece and overseas, who study Nikos Engonopoulos, will participate. The conference, as well as the proceedings thereof, which will be published in book form, aims to further broaden the overall perspective on his oeuvre and the manner in which it is evaluated.
“How do art historians today view Nikos Engonopoulos as an artist and, in general, as a surrealist image maker?” is the basic scholarly theme touched on by the Conference speakers on the first day of the conference.
This will be followed by a round table discussion on: “Discussing Nikos Engonopoulos, the painter, today” with artists: Yiannis Kontaratos, Maria Konti, Aemilia Papaphilippou, Dimitris Sevastakis and coordinated by Nikos Daskalothanassis.
The second day will examine the poetry aspect of his oeuvre: “Nikos Engonopoulos is the poet of the Thirties Generation who has been studied least of all the poets of that generation. This year’s centenary offers an opportunity to study, on new terms, the poetry and poetics of a genuine surrealist, who also loved Greek tradition; and to discuss, in general, issues pertaining to the individuality of Greek modernism in poetry”.
This will be followed by a round table discussion on: “Discussing Nikos Engonopoulos the poet, today”. Four poets of a later generation, Dimitris Eleutherakis, Dimitris Kosmopoulos, Yianna Boukova and Georgia Triantafyllidou discuss Engonopoulos and respond to questions set by an older poet, Nassos Vagenas.
The conference will be open to the public, which will also have an opportunity to see an exhibition of all the posters created by the students of the Graphic Arts / Typography and the Art of the Book of the Athens School of Fine Arts, inspired by the poetry of Nikos Engonopoulos.
