Ο αρχιτέκτονας Θουκυδίδης Π. Βαλεντής (The architect Thucydides P. Valentis)

The book by Chryssa Sahana, Emilia Stefanidou, Sofia Tsitiridou, Assistant Professors at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Aliki Samuelidou, architect, “The Architect Thucydides P. Valentis”, was based on the classification and recording of the archive of Th. Valentis, which was ceded to the Benaki Museum’s Neohellenic Architecture Archives by his children, Maria and Panagiotis Valentis. Maro Adami, head of the Neohellenic Architecture Archives provides the foreword for the publication, while there are also five introductory notes by: Maria Valenti, Dimitris Fatouros, Dimitris Antonakakis, Agni Papaioannou and Loukianos Kilaidonis. The book presentation, in January 2008, was accompanied by an exhibition of the same name, organised in Thessaloniki, based on the architectural archive of Th. Valentis. This exhibition will transfer to the Benaki Museum Piraios Street Annexe in May 2008. Thucydides Valentis (1908-1892) was one of the major Greek architects of the twentieth century, internationally renowned. While studying at the National Technical University of Athens he participated in the study on “schools for the thirties” and prepared designs for some of the most notable school buildings. From 1930 to 1950 he worked as director of Public Works for the Ministry of the Air Force. His academic career commenced in 1946, as a tutor at the National Technical University of Athens, School of Architecture, and went on to a chair at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1961) and then at the N.T.U.A. (1968), where he remained until retirement in 1974. Throughout his career he also maintained a private architectural practice, gaining distinctions in Pan-Hellenic architecture competitions and taking part in architectural exhibitions. He made a major contribution to the architecture of office buildings. As a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece and the Society of Qualified Architects Graduates of Schools of Architecture he was always very active in public affairs and received the Gold Cross of the Order of King George I (1966).
