Small objects like this pillow were decorated with colours and techniques very similar to the ones used for the much larger lokapala figure (ΓΕ 2221), since their they were heading for a similar destination. “Three colour” or sancai wares were fired in vast quantities during the Tang dynasty for burials, and similar products continued to be made on a smaller scale for the same purpose during later dynasties, while more colours were gradually added.
