Mitsakis Nikolaos (1899 - 1941)

N. Mitsakis was born in 1899; he lived and studied in Athens. His mother’s family was descended from the French Philhellene Sauniere.

He was one of the first group of students to enter the School of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens, enrolling in 1917, immediately after the School was established, having failed in his attempt to enter the school of Civil Engineering. He graduated in 1921 and immediately joined the army, taking part in the Asia Minor campaign.

In 1926 he was appointed to the Technical Works Service at the Ministry of Education, while from June 1930 to October 1930 and then from June 1931 he was supervisor of the Design Office for New School Buildings. Furthermore, from 1931 to 1933 he served as a Tutor in Building Science, under Professor Hébrard. He was killed in a car accident in 1941, during the retreat of the Greek Army.

Amongst his completed designs are the Dimitsana School 1927-28; the Praktiko Lykeio Ambelokipon, 1928; the Teaching Complex of Agia Sofia in Thessaloniki, 1928-32; the Annexe to the Marasleion School, 1929-30; the Six-Grade Primary School at Kolonos, 1931; the Twelve-grade primary school in Koletti Street, 1932; the Thessaloniki Superior School for Girls (Anotero Parthenagogeio), 1933; the Koutsina Residence in Volos (ca. 1933); the Holy Monastery of Megalo Spilaio, 1935-36; a Block of Flats on Heyden Street, 1937 (in collaboration with Dimitris Pikionis); while projects that were never built included a participation in the tender process for the Church of the Evangelistria on Tinos in 1930-31, a design that took Second Prize (no first prize was awarded) and a Hotel in Aedipsos – both of which were made in collaboration with K. Panagiotakos.
