Amykles Research Programme
The Benaki Museum, under director Professor Angelos Delivorrias, and in collaboration with an array of distinguished scientists in various fields, starting in 2005 has set into motion an extensive study and research programme focusing on the Spartan temple of Apollo Amykles, whose implementation agency is the V Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities.

The temple of Amykles, ruins of which were located 5 km south of Sparta, on the hill of Aghia Kyriaki, and, specifically, the monumental Throne of Apollo, can be considered, without a doubt, to be the most impressive and yet enigmatic structure from the end of the Archaic Era.

The goal of the current research programme is to resolve a series of issues that continue to overshadow the image of the temple. The goal is also to fully excavate the precincts of the temple, with a surface investigation of sections that haven’t been investigated in the past, an increase in architectural fragments, many of which have been re-used in the walls of Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments of the region, the overall publication of conclusions and the final enhancement of the archaeological site.
