Film showings for the documentary PATRIS (Homeland)
WED 30/01/2008
The shipwreck of an unusual steamship in the bay of Kountouro off the island of Kea, drew the interest of the naval division of the Industrial Museum of Syros in Ermoupolis and the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, and attempted to trace the wreck’s history, assisted by the UFR-Team diving team. The sunken ship is the “Patris” of the Hellenic Steamships of Syros, a rare sample of 19th century marine technology, constructed by the Thames shipyards in 1860, that went down in 1868.
The documentary investigates this tragic accident and the remnants of the shipwreck itself, with impressive underwater shots; and constitutes a small sample of how to utilise the country’s cultural treasures that await investigation and fame.
The documentary is a co-production of ERT with the TECHNIS production offices and the Industrial Museum of Syros, Ermoupolis.
