Winterreise (Winter Journey) is a song cycle that comprises twenty-four poems by Wilhelm Müller set to music by Franz Schubert in 1828.
The songs tell of the emotions of a desperate and unrequited love experienced by a melancholy traveller as he wanders around a winter landscape.
This is one of the most important and well-loved song cycles, recorded very extensively, it is rarely interpreted by female voices.
