The first public showing of the icon of Aghios Nikolaos bearing the signature of the well-known Cretan painter Angelos (signed by the HAND OF ANGELOS), who was active in Chandakas (Herakleion) during the first half of the 15th century, at a time when the island was held by the Venetians.
Giving talks about the icon, which will become a treasured part of the Benaki Museum’s permanent collection, will be the following:
Panagiotis Vokotopoulos, Academician; Maria Vassilaki, Associate Professor of the University of Thessaly; Dimitris Zymaris, Historian; Stergios Stassinopoulos, Head of the Department of Conservation at the Benaki Museum; and Lena Vranopoulou, Conservator at the Benaki Museum.
The evening will commence with an address by the Director of the Benaki Museum, Angelos Delivorrias.
