March 21st marks the Spring Equinox, i.e. the start of spring, and has been named World Poetry Day for this very reason.
As part of this this celebration, the Benaki Museum, has taken up a welcome proposal by Angeliki Kotti and decided to dedicate this year’s event to the poet who wrote Romiosyni, given that 2009 has been declared to be the Year of Yiannis Ritsos.
Moreover, a decision was made to entrust this event to children, the very people we all hope and wish will become true poetry readers: The Benaki Museum invited two schools that run blogs, the 6th Lyceum of Kallithea and the 10th Lyceum of Piraeus, and that have shown an interest in the work of Yiannis Ritsos, and met with a very positive result: pupils at both schools worked with a good will and dedicated a great deal of time in order to understand the poet, to get a sense of the citizen and to comprehend the work of Yiannis Ritsos, and to prepare a performance entitled: "Be a sun, give the gift of light".
