Scientific Day Conference
“Miradas cruzadas: intercambios culturales y artísticos entre Grecia y Francia en el período de entreguerras”

The day conference will take place within the framework of the research programme “Paris-Athens 1919-1939: The double voyage”,  a collaboration between the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (IMS-ITS), the Benaki Museum and the École Française d’ Athènes (EfA), commencing in January 2008, whose purpose is a systematic and all-encompassing study of the artistic and more general cultural links and exchanges between Greece and France for the period 1919-1939.
The programme is directed by a Scientific Committee made up of:  Lucile Arnoux-Farnoux (Université François-Rabelais Tours), Sophie Basch (Institut Universitaire de France, Université de Poitiers), Polyna Kosmadaki (Benaki Museum), François Loyer (C.N.R.S), Evgenios D. Mathiopoulos (University of Crete, IMS-ITS), Paul-Louis Paul-Louis Rinuy  (Université Paris 8), Panayiotis Tournikiotis (National Technical University of Athens), Maria Tsoutsoura (Ionian University).

The day conference will mainly look into issues concerning Franco-Greek exchanges and ideological osmoses in the fields of the visual arts and art discourse, and thus focuses on the work of major art critics and art historians of the Interwar Years, including Zacharias Papantoniou, Pantelis Prevelakis, Christian Zervos, Tériade and so forth; the presence and activities of French intellectuals in Greece; the manner in which magazines and artists in Greece accepted modern trends during the Interwar Years; as well as the role which was played by publications such as L’ hellenisme contemporain which was published in Athens and Le journal des Hellènes, which was published in Paris. 

The day conference was organised by Evgenios D. Mathiopoulos, Associate Professor of Art History.
