It is well known that Abraham Lincoln’s power of rhetoric played a major role in his political career. Yet this man, who only actually had one year of formal education, said that he was taught the concept of logic and proof as a self-taught pupil of Euclid. In fact, he proudly stated that he could prove from memory any theorem from the six first books of Euclid’s “Elements”. 

Alongside the theatrical release of Steven Spielberg's film Lincoln, Apostolos Doxiadis will do a reading of the rhetoric of this great American president, with particular emphasis on Lincoln's love of Euclid and will show, specifically, how in his most renowned speech, the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln revealed a deep, instinctive understanding of the Euclidian method, which scholars have only recently started to decipher.
