Baroque Project Orchestra directed by renowned harpsichordist Jerassimos Coidan, presents a baroque program with the title “Elective affinities” with works by J. S. Bach, A. Vivaldi and F. B. Conti.
Johann Sebastian Bach stands central in this program which includes two of his most celebrated concerti: the double violin concerto BWV 1043 and the harpsichord concerto in d minor, BWV 1052.
We are fascinated to the idea that “affinities” between composers and their work, while being common during the Baroque era, express mutual appreciation. Such an affinity is shown by the fact that Bach found Vivaldi’s concerto for 4 violins RV 580 so fascinating that he transcribed it for 4 harpsichords.
From all Bach’s harpsichord concertos, the Cantor picked the d minor BWV 1052 to re-use as material for his cantatas BWV 146 and BWV 188.
Thus, “elective affinities” manifest not only among people but even between orchestral and vocal works. Vocal music could not be missing from this program.
Johann Sebastian Bach presented Francesco Bartolomeo Conti’s cantata "Languet Anima Mea" in Weimar, Coethen and Leipzig. He didn’t change a note, but he added two oboes ad libitum and a written-out continuo part for the organ. Bach’s preference for this cantata is well justified: the cantata is a jewel, and we proudly present it for the first time in Greece.
Baroque Project Orchestra was founded in spring 2015 and is a string chamber orchestra with harpsichord. Being an autonomous and versatile ensemble, it selects known and lesser known repertoire and performs with enthusiasm and power. Its members multi-function as soloists and ensemble players, so BPO can cover concertante as well as orchestral repertoire with its own forces. However, the orchestra regularly collaborates with excellent soloists and singers, giving various interesting projects to the public
