"Ser pintor y poeta"
THU 10/05/2024
A large retrospective exhibition that forms part of the celebrations for the centenary of the birth of Nikos Engonopoulos (1907-1985).<br>
The purpose of the exhibition is to present mainly the visual arts oeuvre of this Greek surrealist, while at the same time also honouring his poetry output.
This centenary celebration by the Benaki Museum will fill a gap of almost thirty years since the last major Engonopoulos exhibition, organised in 1978 by the National Gallery of Greece.
The exhibition includes representative works by Engonopoulos from all stages of his over fifty years of painting, that illustrate both his themes (surrealist compositions, icons, architectural drawings), and the various media which he, at times, utilised (oils, watercolours, tempera on wood, China ink, charcoal, pencils). For the first time the costumes the artist designed for the performances of the Hellenic Chorodrama, some of which were also painted by him and which, along with set design models, will illustrate the importance of his theatrical endeavours. This wealth of artistic and theatrical material will be complemented by poetry, prose and first editions of his poetry collections.
Works selected by: Lena Engonopoulou, Errietti Engonopoulou-Ledaki
Scientific Research: Katerina Perpinioti-Agazir (art), Thanassis Hatzopoulos (poetry).
