The sensitivity of early photographic materials doesn’t allow their prolonged exposure to light. Therefore these photographs remain in a specially designed storage area at the Photographic Archives establishments at Piraeus street annex under controlled conditions of temperature and relative humidity.

On the occasion of the World Day of Museums the Department's staff will select some unique pieces from the 19th century photographic collection which will be presented to small groups.
The audience will travel to 19th century Athens observing travellers’ photography as it depicts the ancient monuments of the city and its inhabitants. We will study how the new medium of depiction was introduced to Greek society and the crucial role played by foreign photographers in the spread of the art.

Our starting point will be the rare work of the first Greek photographer Philippos Margaritis. At the same time, we will comment on issues related to the technological development of the medium as well as the technical restraints which had to be overcome for a broader subject-matter.

Number of participants: 10 people

Entry is free, on a first come-first served basis.
