LECTURE
"Iznik ceramics: From Topkapi to Paris and Faliro"
A talk by Mina Moraitou, curator of the Islamic collection of the Benaki Museum
THU 14/12/2017
On the occasion of the exhibition “Iznik: The fascination with ceramics” a talk will be held on the history of Iznik ceramics during the Ottoman period and on their popularity during the 19th century.  This talk will elaborate on the interest shown by Europeans during the 19th century, the formation of collections, the early studies and the revival of the style in the workshops of Europe, Turkey and Greece, highlighting their influence in the history of ceramics.

At the end of the 15th century, pottery workshops started operating in Nicaea in Asia Minor, the town lending its name to the Iznik ceramics. The brightly coloured wares with vivid designs were admired and sought after, both at the time of their creation and especially in the 19th century, when they were judged to be among the highest achievements in pottery.
