Catalogue accompanying the exhibition held at the Benaki Museum in summer 2000. It records impressions of the neoclassical buildings of 19th and early 20th century Athens made by the architect and academician Pavlos Mylonas, during the periods 1941-1945 and 1950-1965. The purpose of these drawings was to record, study and in many cases preserve the modern architectural history of the city, a city that is a “museum of 19th-century design” as the architect himself points out in his introductory note. The book is prefaced by the Museum director, Prof. Angelos Delivorrias, and includes a text on the “Significance of the Mylonas exhibition” by Associate Professor M. Kardamitsi-Adami, a text by Professor M. Biris entitled “Classicism as a mass aesthetic expression of 19th century Athenians”, and two texts by academician P. Mylonas, one entitled “Impressions of Athenian neoclassical buildings” and the other “Architectural classicism in modern Greece. Its historic and aesthetic significance”. This is followed by photographs of the entire collection of drawings in the exhibition.
