This publication was issued when drawings of Chios by architect Dimitris Pikionis were exhibited at the Benaki Museum. In 1929 Philippos Argentis commissioned Pikionis to prepare a study on the architecture of Chios from the Post-Byzantine to the Modern Era. The study was completed in 1930, after a three-month stay on the island by the architect, and remained unpublished. This book is a compendium of a large-format folio, which circulated alongside, and contains an almost complete series of designs from the Pikionis study, which is preserved at the "Korais" Library on the Island of Chios, as well as the text, written in French and Greek, found in the architect's personal archive. It contains 53 coloured photographs of designs by Pikionis. There are forewords by the Director of HSBC in Greece, L. Hiliadakis, and by A. Pikioni and M. Paroussis. The publication includes texts by Prof. Ch. Bouras (“Dimitris Pikionis and architecture on Chios”), Associate Professor M. Kardamitsi-Adami (“Dimitris Pikionis and the back-to-roots movement”), by M. Paroussis (“Dimitris Pikionis and carrying out the study on the architecture of Chios”), as well as the final chapter of the study by D. Pikionis on the architecture of Chios. According to M. Kardamitsi-Adami, this project by Pikionis was the “first organised attempt to investigate and study traditional housing”.
