Κώστας Μπαλάφας. Ήπειρος (Kostas Balafas. Epirus)

This book, which contains 300 photographs taken between 1940 and 1970 by Kostas Balafas, is the Epirot photographer’s evidence of the land of his birth and its people. The rugged mountain landscape of Epirus, with its peaks, slopes, plateaus and gorges, with its wide forests, river waters and stone villages, is glorified through his photographs as are ordinary people, wage-earners, shepherds, farmers, fishermen and artisans, who are poor but dignified without a trace of wretchedness or destitution. In his work, Epirot women play a leading role, in the market, in the mountain passes and in the fields, solitary, silent, black-clad figures of stone. His style is characterised by austerity and simplicity. With his camera he seeks the essence of the theme without studied formality. Epirus, its people and their ageless way of life that has ceased to exist in our times have been immortalised by Kostas Balafas.
