This volume depicts works representative of Hellenic and Roman sculpture from the Neolithic period up to and including Late Antiquity that have been assembled by 25 writers, university professors and distinguished researchers from institutes in Greece and abroad. The systematic and exhaustive search for the sources that influenced their creation has been conducted with a sense of responsibility that is exemplary in terms of the scholarly investigation of how the Greek cultural past is perceived. From this viewpoint, the study offers valuable information of an archaeological nature, but also extends to historical and sociological implications. All the material that illustrates this book was photographed by Stelios Skopelitis. Photographs of other sculptures have also been gathered from various museums in Greece and abroad for comparative purposes.
