Maroulina: A pioneer of greek art jewellery. Sophia Thanopoulou (1908-1997)

Catalogue of the exhibition that took place as part of a cycle of exhibitions and publications on Greek jewellery carried out by the Benaki Museum, presenting the work of Sofia Thanopoulou, known by her artistic alias, Maroulina.
Self-taught, S.Th. combined everyday with precious materials (shells, beads, leather, gold cord, pearls, coral and black coral, precious and semi-precious stones, silver and gold, and much else) in her creations, which were a landmark in the history of Greek jewellery. In 1954 she opened the renowned “Magazaki tis Maroulinas” (Maroulina’s Little Shop) on the island of Mykonos, and her regular clientele included many famous Greek and foreign artists. As an example of the country’s tourist development, for almost twenty years (1954-1972), the shop was an island landmark and an emblem of the optimism typical of the post-war era.
The catalogue includes photographs and comments on 350 pieces of jewellery, objects and good luck charms created by S.Th. from the nineteen forties to the end of the nineteen eighties, with unpublished memoirs and thoughts by the artist, a text by art historian Fotini Sidera and a foreword by Angelos Delivorrias, director of the Benaki Museum.
