Ο κόσμος του Διονύση Φωτόπουλου (The world of Dionysis Fotopoulos)

Plentiful photographic material of a large number of "objets d’ art" (busts, idols, icons, paintings, miniatures, ship’s figureheads, etc.) belonging to the personal collection of renowned Greek set designer Dionysis Fotopoulos. These objects, gathered from the four corners of the earth, are presented together for the first time, providing an image of the artist's everyday surroundings, in which he lived and created art for close on 40 years. Alongside these, are works from the major teachers of the thirties generation (Tsarouchis, Moralis, Diamantopoulos, Mavroidis and others) paintings and models by his preferred set designers (Bax, Benoit, Nikos Georgiadis, Vassilis Fotopoulos and so forth), drawings and works of sculptors with whom he collaborated (including Apartis Kapralos and others ), as well as approximately 500 portraits of the man himself drawn by his friends, whether they were artists or not (Moralis, Ghikas, Melina Mercouri, Pinter, Heiner Miller etc.), during private moments, which bring to life an entire world, the atmosphere of a life, the life of Dionysis Fotopoulos. The name of Dionysis Fotopoulos is ineradicably linked to the history of Modern Greek theatre, over the last forty years and he has honoured his country by gaining recognition in the contemporary artistic avant-guard. At the same time, he has collaborated with some of the best-known opera-, theatre- and film directors worldwide. This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition "The world of Dionysis Fotopoulos", which took place at the Benaki Museum, Pireos Street Annexe in Athens (21 December 2005 to 19 March 2006). The catalogue includes a foreword by Professor Angelos Delivorrias, Director of the Benaki Museum and note from Mr. Konstantinos Kosmadakis, Managing Director of ABB, the company sponsoring the exhibition.
