K. Porfyris. Texts about culture, history and politics

This book contains an extensive selection from the texts of K. Porfyris (1910-1967) that were originally published in the newspaper AVGI and the periodical “Epitheorisi Technis” (Art Review). These texts highlight the central themes, the basic axes of his thought and his lines of enquiry: Modern Greek history, Modern Greek literature and theatre, politics / ideology and current events. One chapter, entitled “Eptanissiaka” (Concerning the Ionian Islands) refers to historical and literary problems of the Ionian Islands, to which he was particularly attached and in which constantly took an interest. Besides texts that have already been published, the book also includes unfamiliar texts, from the K. Porfyris Archive, which his daughter, Gina, gifted to the Benaki Museum.
The book is completed by texts from scholars, as well as the contributions made by Spyros Asdrahas, Dimitris Raftopoulos and Aemilia Karali, concerning the person and oeuvre of Porfyris.
The purpose of this publication is not solely to record, to the measure possible, Porfyris’s intellectual world; the way in which he performed interventions; and his orientations; but to highlight an aspect of the lines of enquiry, the directions, the dynamics and contrasts of left-wing intelligentsia during the crucial periods of the nineteen fifties and nineteen sixties.
