James Ensor: L' oeuvre gravé

The book accompanies the exhibition of the same name, which was held at the Benaki Museum from September 30th to November 29th 2009. Engraving holds a special place in the oeuvre of the Belgian expressionist and is considered to be of equal significance as his painting. Thematically, as with his painting, they are drawn to landscapes, portraits, self-portraits, still lives, and contain bizarre, imaginary and religious elements. The two texts, by curator Xavier Tricot and art historian Martha Chalikia, analyse the significance of engraving in his artistic progress and study the social components that formed the artist’s world at the end of the 19th and the dawn of the 20th century.
The works shown in the exhibition belong to the KBC Group Collection, Belgium.
