A Singular Antiquity. Archaeological and Hellenic Identity in twentieth-century Greece, MOUSIO BENAKI, 3rd Supplement

available online

This volume includes a large part of the proceedings of the conference entitled “Archaeology, Antiquity and Hellenicity in twentieth century Greece”, that took place in the Benaki Museum Piraios Street Annexe in January 2007.
The volume, entitled “A Singular Antiquity” gathers together – for the first time covering such a multi-scientific breadth – articles by archaeologists, historians, anthropologists, and historians of literature, art and architecture. Their joint purpose is to verify how archaeology came to be viewed as a contributing factor to cultivating the intellect, as well as a major influence in the discussion on Greek culture, cultural heritage and national identity. Archaeology was a backbone of the national strategy in modern Greece:  the book examines the manner in which positions were formulated and the epistemological programme of archaeological studies in Greece; its interaction with other sciences; and finally its involvement in the intellectual and political life of the land, as well as the way archaeology was called upon to meet the will and mood of the public. Taking as its symbolic termini the two Greek Olympiads – 1896 and 2004 – when the Ancient Greek heritage was called upon to formulate the requisite ideological grounds, the authors trace the steps that defined the current image of Greek archaeology.
