PAPER CONSERVATION
PAPER CONSERVATION
The Paper Conservation section is committed to the preservation, conservation treatment, and study of prints, drawings and watercolours from the Prints & Drawings collection.

Scrolls and bound volumes from the Islamic, the Byzantine collection and the Library, architectural drawings from the Neohellenic architecture department, archival material from the Historical Archives Annexe, as well as toys from the Toys collection, are also handled.

The team is regularly involved in installations, exhibitions and the display of paper objects and in this context also handles a number of contemporary works. The section advises on storage, the environment and the condition of new acquisitions while members also act as couriers for travelling exhibitions and loans.

Works on paper and parchment are very delicate and subject to damage from many sources - rough handling, inhospitable environments, exposure to light, and unsuitable housing materials. Conservators tailor treatments to alleviate deterioration and repair damage, respecting the unique characteristics of the work of art.  Basic operations include the mending of tears, the infill of losses, the toning down of disfiguring stains and discolorations and the removal of acidic mounting materials.

Conservators promote the development of methods and materials for the proper storage of artefacts, and form protocols regarding the handling and display of paper objects. Working in close collaboration with scientists and curators they investigate the materials and techniques used to create the works of art. Such interaction significantly adds to our understanding of the artist’s creative process, informs treatment decisions and improves the management of paper collections.
